On the south bank of the Hengmen River and with only 49 nautical miles of waterway away from Hong Kong, Zhongshan Passenger Port is located at Torch High-tech Industrial Development Zone, Zhongshan, Guangdong Province, which is known as the hometown of oversea Chinese with beautiful scenery and developed economy. It covers an area of 28,286 m2 with newly built joint inspection building and advanced square facilities. Its environment is beautiful and its transportation is convenient.
In 1984, Zhongshan Passenger Port was approved by the State Council as the state-level firs-class open port. On February 9, 1985, Zhongshan-Hong Kong Passenger Shipping Co-op Co., Ltd. officially opened and, on the same day, Zhongshan—Hong Kong passenger transport lines started operation as well. Zhongshan-Hong Kong Passenger Shipping Co-op Co., Ltd. is now jointly operated by Zhongshan Public Utilities Group Co., Ltd. and Chu Kong Shipping Enterprises (Group) Co., Ltd., and its general agent is Hong Kong Chu Kong Passenger Transport Co., Ltd. The company is engaged in waterway passenger transport between Zhongshan and Hong Kong, and provides safe, fast, comfortable traffic conditions for all walks of life during their business, family visits, and travel. There is exquisite food for tourists to taste on the ferries, and the company is also engaged in transportation along the Pearl River.
At present, the company owns four luxury high-speed catamarans with modern equipment, i.e. "Zhongshan", "Yixian", "Jinzhu Lake", and "Xingzhong", and has rented two ships, namely "Taishan" and "Pengxing". Usually, there are 24 single voyages a day between Zhongshan and Hong Kong, but at peak time, there can be 32 voyages for one day with the sailing time of 90 minutes. From 1985 to 2017, 29.72 million passengers has been transported, among whom more than 1 million passengers were transported in 2002, and up to 1.2994 million passengers were ferried in 2017, creating a new record of annual traffic volume. In December, 2004, the company opened the Zhongshan-Hong Kong International Airport routes, greatly facilitating the transportation of passengers between Zhongshan and the West Bank of the Pearl River. On August 18, 2017, the ferry line between Zhongshan and Shenzhen Fuyong Airport was opened. Eight single voyages were realized every day between the two ports with the sailing time of 45 minutes. This line made due contributions to the integration of Zhongshan into Guangdong-Hong Kong- Macao Greater Bay Area construction.
Adhering to the service tenet of "Safety first, customer first" for over three decade, the company has won unanimous praise from tourists and produced good economic and social effects. On July 2, 1998, the first anniversary of Hong Kong’s return, "Zhongshan" ferry transported President Jiang Zemin and Mr. Tung Chee-hwa, Chief Executive of HKSAR government, to the anniversary celebration. On July 1, 1999, the second anniversary of Hong Kong’s return, "Zhongshan" ferry transported Hu Jintao and Mr. Tung Chee-hwa to the anniversary celebration. The company did a good job during the transportation and received high praise from the superiors.
For the convenience of passengers, more than 60 computer ticket sales outlets were set up in the towns and districts of Zhongshan, and 4 bus transport lines were put into operation to transport passengers free of charge.
